Spotlight on Our Member!
Doug
and Tanya Comer Barnett, Missouri
 |
| Our
first horses were foundation- bred
horses that we purchased from Gary
Dawson, a local dentist who was
known for his quality foundation
horses. I bought a weanling filly
and stud colt in 1981 before Tanya
and I were married, and we did a
lot of learning together! I
learned a little about patience,
and a lot about who's bigger and
stronger. Actually we still have
that little filly, she's now 20
years old and has given us some
fine foals. In 1995 Dr. Dawson
decided to get out of the horse
business, and we had the
opportunity to purchase his last
three mares. In 1996 we had 3
foals and we were hooked. We
decided we wanted to expand, but
we couldn't find any horses that
met our requirements. We did quite
a bit of searching, and then we
read a little ad in the back of
the journal that advertised |

Skipper
W horses. We made a phone call and found
out that they were located in Ozark,
Missouri, which wasn't far, so we drove
down to see what they had.
As
we drove up the road to Denny and Carol
Willis's we knew that these horses would
fit the bill. Carol showed us the horses
and told us about the Skipper W legacy.
They had two mares for sale they called
the Susie sisters. One had already foaled
and one was suppose to foal anytime. We
really liked them but still had a lot of
questions, Denny suggested that we take
some time and go look at a few more places
and then come back if we were still
interested. And look we did! We traveled
many miles and to a couple of different
states. We also did some research on Hank
Wiescamp and the horses he raised. We
finally decided that the best we had seen
was right here in Missouri. So we went
back to the Willis's and purchased the
Susie sisters. These were full sisters by
Skip N Honor out of Serenade Sue, and they
each had a foal by DW Skippa Assault. At
that time we also purchased a yearling
stud colt by Spanish High out of Skip N
Spray. Denny told us this little stud colt
would make a great maternal sire, and boy,
was he right. Last year we had our first
colt crop by DW Spanish Skiparing, and we
were extremely pleased with each one.
Now
we really had the itch, and it was Skipper
W breeding from then on. In 1997 we ended
up purchasing four mares and one stud colt
from the Willis's. This included our first
branded mare, Larks Essence by Super Lark
out of Social Pride (a grand-daughter of
Skipper's King). We bred everything to
Strings Bright, a branded palomino
stallion. We wanted to add a little color
to our herd. It was at this point that we
decided that we wanted to start a breeding
program that was built around the best
Skipper W horses we could find, and we
thought we were well on the way.
In
1998 we cut back, and only purchased one
new mare, but in 1999 we made up for it by
buying three more great mares. One was
Skip Be Ark, a really nice branded bay
mare by Super Lark out of Skip Be Lark.
We've had three nice fillies out of this
mare by Strings Bright. Then probably one
of my favorites, Scotch N Belle, who is
another branded mare by Scottish Speed out
of Skip N Ring (a half sister to Skippers
Ring). She's bred to the hilt and she
really produces. We've had three fine
foals out of this mare as well. Last
year's stud colt by Skip N Don (branded,
by Skippers Ring out of Skip N Donna) is
really outstanding. Our third mare was DW
Silver Serenade, she was young, gray and
big. She's given us two nice big stud
colts. We sold her first stud colt last
October at the Skipper W sale in Oklahoma.
We have his palomino brother in the barn,
and I think he's going to be better than
the last one. We can't wait to see her
foal by DW Spanish Skiparing. In 2000 we
purchased one more mare, another well-bred
young mare, DW Exquisite Assault, by Skips
Assault out of Silver Sarah.

| I
believe over the past four years
we have acquired some of the best
quality well bred horses around to
put into our breeding program.
We've been very fortunate during
this time to have a high
percentage of fillies that we have
tried to keep back and build a
great base to choose from. We have
raised one stud colt, DT Skippers
Don, that we are especially
pleased with, he's by Skip N Don
(Skippers Ring x Skip N Donna) out
of DW Sisters Image (Scotch
Image x Social Sister). He is just
one of those picture perfect
horses. |

We are going to use him on three of
our young mares this season, and see
if he throws that baby doll head and
great confirmation. We have built up
a great herd that we are extremely
proud of. We haven't sold many to
date, but we are ready to open the
doors and start moving a few to make
room for the next four years.
Most
of our horses are 100% Wiescamp. We
have some that would make great
halter horses, and others that are
very athletic and would make great
riders. I think we've got something
for everyone. We have a very hard
time parting with each and every one
of them, but we can't keep them all.
We love to talk about horses, and we
love to have people come and look at
our horses, so please give us a
call, or check out our website,
comerquarterhorses.com.
We
also love to see what's out there,
so we may be stopping by your place,
if we haven't done so already.
